Watermelon Pollinizer

A diploid variety required for the fertilization of sterile triploid watermelon hybrids. It provides viable pollen, which is critical for the formation of seedless fruits.

Triploid watermelons are sterile and do not produce viable pollen, therefore, diploid pollinizer varieties must be planted in the field to ensure fruit set. Pollinizers are placed in 3:1 or 2:1 planting patterns, alternating rows of the seedless hybrid with rows of the pollinizer plant.

Key criteria for selecting a pollinizer include flowering synchrony with the main hybrid and visual differences in fruit appearance to prevent accidental mixing during harvest. To ensure simultaneous flowering, the pollinizer is sometimes sown with a 7–14 day shift. Successful pollination depends on the activity of bees and bumblebees, which transfer the heavy pollen between flowers.
