Sweet chestnut is characterized by functional self-sterility, where self-pollination either does not lead to fruit formation or triggers early fruit drop due to inbreeding depression and late-acting self-incompatibility mechanisms. Fertilization efficiency is further limited by dichogamy, which manifests as the asynchronous maturation of male and female flowers on the same tree.
In natural populations of the species, gynodioecy occurs, where some individuals are functionally female and do not produce their own pollen. As the chestnut is an ambophilous plant, pollination is provided by both wind and insects; however, without the selection of compatible pollinizer varieties planted in alternating rows, the fruit set of isolated trees remains extremely low or impossible.
