Grafting of Castanea sativa is complicated by high sensitivity to scion-rootstock incompatibility, which necessitates careful selection of pairs. The use of hybrid rootstocks, such as combinations of C. sativa and C. crenata, can increase resistance to blight and root rots, but is often associated with the risk of scion rejection.

Technological success of the process depends critically on precise alignment of the cambial layers, which makes manual grafting methods more effective than mechanized ones. An important factor is the temperature regime: for complete tissue union, the daytime temperature should be approximately 21°C.

The phenological stage of the rootstock during sap flow determines survival rates, with side grafting and whip-and-tongue grafting showing more consistent results compared to shield budding.
