The term Marrone denotes a group of traditional Italian Castanea sativa varieties, including many regional cultivars. These are large deciduous trees 20–35 meters tall, which begin fruiting 5–6 years after grafting.

The fruits are medium or large in size and have a shiny reddish-brown skin with dark stripes. Characteristic features include light, sweet, and firm flesh, the absence of an internal pellicle, and ease of peeling the skin from the seed.

Plants in this group often lack fully developed male flowers, therefore planting trees of other varieties is required for pollination. The crop prefers hilly regions with acidic soils and is susceptible to chestnut blight.
