The rootstock was developed in 1976 as part of a joint breeding program. Trees grafted onto this rootstock are taller than those on M.26 and form a canopy with wide branch angles. Due to high yields and early onset of bearing, the use of supports is required.
The plant possesses good winter hardiness, but is susceptible to woolly apple aphid. The rootstock is sensitive to viruses, therefore only virus-free material should be used for grafting. The influence of the rootstock on the fruit size of the scion is comparable to that of the M.9 rootstock.
