The plant is a hybrid of Malus niedzwetzkyana and Malus scheideckeri. It forms a dense oval crown with upright shoots, which are pubescent at a young age and become glabrous over time.
The fruits are small, of the "crabapple" type, and are not suitable for consumption like the fruits of Malus domestica varieties. In scientific literature, the name may be used as a collective designation for a number of decorative apple trees.
