Scion

A scion is the aerial part of a plant in the form of a cutting or bud, taken from a cultivar for grafting onto a rootstock. It is the scion that determines the varietal characteristics of the future plant, such as flavor, yield, and fruit quality.

The scion represents the upper part of a grafted plant, responsible for the development of aerial organs and the quality of the resulting harvest. Assessing the condition of a grafted crop requires considering the properties of both components, as the rootstock determines size and growth vigor, while the scion provides varietal value. When caring for such plants, it is critical to control the emergence of rootstock suckers below the graft union to prevent the suppression of the cultural scion.
