Grafting pear onto common quince, often used to create dwarfing trees, is frequently accompanied by biological incompatibility, manifested as metabolic disorders and deformations in the graft union zone. The use of intergeneric rootstocks, such as mountain ash, hawthorn, or cotoneaster, allows for increased winter hardiness or modification of the crown habit; however, such combinations often have a limited lifespan.

Signs of physiological incompatibility in the pear scion include the formation of overgrowths and swellings at the graft union, bark peeling, crown suppression, and excessive sucker development on the rootstock. Due to the lack of a universal method for assessing compatibility, the selection of the scion-rootstock pair remains a critical stage, with budding and whip-and-tongue grafting recognized as the most effective grafting methods.
