A pear propagation technology based on selective rootstock compatibility and the high sensitivity of the cambium to desiccation. Success depends on the proper selection of the scion-rootstock combination and the speed of execution.

The best results are achieved when grafting onto pear seedlings. When quince is used as a rootstock, biological incompatibility is frequently observed, manifesting as brittleness at the graft union or scion mortality. Using mountain ash, serviceberry, or chokeberry allows for the production of dwarf forms; however, due to the different growth rates of the wood, such trees are short-lived and prone to breakage after 5–7 years. Grafting onto apple carries a high risk of rejection and requires an intercalary graft.
Budding in the first half of August is the primary method for pear propagation in nurseries, ensuring a high yield of seedlings. Pears require the cambial layers to be joined as quickly as possible, preferably within one minute, as air exposure significantly reduces the success rate. For spring scion grafting, adherence to timing is critical: bark grafting is possible only during the period of active sap flow.
