Pyrus L.
A key feature of pear rootstocks is their limited compatibility with clonal quince rootstocks and the necessity of using interstocks. The choice of rootstock ranges from Pyrus communis or Pyrus ussuriensis seedlings for winter-hardy plantations to selected clonal forms of the PG series.
In the reference 19 varieties crop Pear, where this is mentioned in the description.
When selecting rootstocks for pears, the main problem is the physiological incompatibility of many varieties with quince, which is used to create dwarf plantations. To overcome graft union failure, interstocks of varieties with high affinity to both the scion and the rootstock are used.
In regions with severe climates, seed rootstocks obtained from Pyrus communis and Pyrus ussuriensis seedlings are more often used, which ensure longevity and winter hardiness, but are characterized by vigorous tree growth. To reduce vigor, breeding of clonal rootstocks within the genus Pyrus, such as the PG-2 and PG-12 series, is being actively conducted.
The use of quince rootstocks is limited by their poor anchorage, which requires the installation of supports, and high sensitivity to soil composition, particularly to alkaline environments. Unlike apples, the range of reliable clonal rootstocks for pears adapted to different conditions remains narrow, and attempts to use other crops lead to biological incompatibility.
