The causative agent of the disease is the ascomycete fungus Venturia pirina, which has an anamorph stage known as Fusicladium pirinum. This pathogen is highly host-specific and does not infect apple trees, just as the apple scab pathogen does not infect pears. The disease manifests as chlorotic spots with an olive-colored fungal growth on leaves, flowers, ovaries, and fruits.
A distinctive feature of pear scab is the infection of young shoots, where cracking pustules and ulcers form, leading to fruit deformation and reduced winter hardiness of the trees. In breeding, resistance to the disease is controlled by both individual genes and polygenic complexes, with molecular markers such as PVf1 being used to identify resistant genotypes.
