Peach Scab

Prunus persica (L.) Batsch

A fungal disease of peach caused by Cladosporium carpophilum, affecting fruit, leaves, and shoots. It manifests as dark, velvety spots, leading to fruit cracking and shoot deformation.

The causal agent of peach scab is the imperfect fungus Cladosporium carpophilum. The infection affects the aerial parts of the plant, appearing on fruits, leaves, and shoots.

On fruits, the disease is observed 6–8 weeks after flowering in the form of small, circular spots that eventually darken, forming an olive or black velvety coating. In cases of severe infection, the spots coalesce, the fruit skin cracks, which facilitates the subsequent development of secondary rots.

On leaves, the infection appears as diffuse pale-green or brown spots on the underside of the leaf blade. On young shoots, circular brown lesions form, causing stunted development of the affected plant parts.
