Plum Scab

Prunus domestica L.

A fungal disease of plum caused by the imperfect fungus Cladosporium carpophilum. It primarily affects the fruit, forming characteristic spots with a velvety coating that eventually crack.

In the reference 10 varieties crop European plum, where this is mentioned in the description.

The disease is caused by the fungus Cladosporium carpophilum. On plum fruit, the disease manifests when they reach half their size. Initially, small, round, greenish-olive spots appear on the skin, which eventually expand and become covered with a velvety olive or nearly black coating. With intensive disease development, the spots merge into a continuous crust, which leads to cracking of the fruit skin and creates favorable conditions for the penetration of secondary infections, including fruit rot.

Infection of leaves and shoots is observed significantly less frequently. On leaf blades, the pathogen forms diffuse pale-green or brown spots, which appear towards the end of the growing season. On young shoots, the fungus causes the formation of multiple small brown ulcers, which suppress the overall development of the plant. Specific races of the pathogen, as well as resistance genes of Prunus domestica to this pathogen, have not been described in current scientific literature to date.
