Cultivation
Vitis L.
The primary method of vegetative propagation of grapes, based on the pronounced polarity of the vine and the ability to form adventitious roots from stem nodes.
In the reference 37 varieties crop Grapevine, where this is mentioned in the description.
Grapevine exhibits a pronounced polarity, whereby nutrients move to the basal part of the cutting to facilitate root development, while shoots develop from dormant buds. The crop lacks adventitious buds, so for successful propagation, the cutting must necessarily possess a developed bud.
The technical specificity includes grooving techniques to activate the cambium, 'blinding' (removal) of the lower buds to prevent underground shoot formation, and mandatory waxing of the upper sections to conserve moisture. Grapevine cuttings require pre-soaking to restore water balance prior to rooting.
