The name Muscat de Colmar causes confusion in ampelographic literature, as it may refer to different varieties. In most cases, it is a synonym for Goldriesling. Genetically, this variety is a hybrid of Riesling and the variety Précoce de Malingre.

The variety has an early ripening period and belongs to wine grape types. It is characterized by susceptibility to downy mildew and Botrytis. Wines produced from this grape are noted for their lightness and a combination of herbal, lemon, and muscat undertones.

In a number of sources, the name Muscat de Colmar is encountered as the result of a cross between Pinot gris and Muscat Ottonel, and also appears in lists of synonyms for various Muscats, which is explained by historical classification errors or confusion during the exchange of cuttings.
