Marianna is a spontaneous hybrid of cherry plum and Munson plum. The plant is characterized by good vigor and high resistance to root-knot nematode and Armillaria. The rootstock propagates well vegetatively by hardwood cuttings and is adapted to waterlogged and poorly aerated soils, where other rootstocks are at risk of death.

The main disadvantages include high susceptibility to bacterial canker, a tendency to produce abundant root suckers, and a shallow root system requiring support for trees in the first years. The cultivar is incompatible with peaches and nectarines, and under cool climate conditions, it exhibits insufficient winter hardiness.

The fruits are small, externally resembling a cherry or a small cherry plum. Although they are edible, the plant is not intended for commercial fruit production but is used exclusively as a rootstock for plum, apricot, and certain almond varieties.
