Begonia x hiemalis Fotsch
A common fungal disease of Begonia elatior caused by specialized fungal species, leading to the formation of powdery coating, deformation, and leaf drop.

The causative agents of the disease in Begonia elatior are the specialized species Oidium begoniae, as well as the polyphagous Erysiphe cichoracearum. The infection manifests as whitish or brownish-white powdery spots, which most often appear on the underside of the leaf blades.
As the disease progresses, the spots spread to both sides of the leaf, petioles, and flower buds. The affected tissues turn yellow, acquire a "papery" texture, and die off. Severe infestation causes leaf curling, premature plant defoliation, and loss of commercial quality.
