In Chrysanthemum indicum, double-flowering is characterized by the quantitative ratio of flower types within the capitulum. Wild forms have predominantly single inflorescences consisting of 1–3 rows of ray florets and a central disk of tubular florets. During the breeding process, tubular florets are replaced by ray florets, which is visually assessed by the density of the inflorescence.
The trait is sensitive to agrotechnical conditions; in particular, a lack of moisture can lead to smaller inflorescences and a reduction in their double-flowering degree. In highly double-flowered cultivars, a reduction in the number of fertile tubular florets is often observed, which leads to a decrease in seed propagation ability. The level of double-flowering acts as a key ornamental parameter, determining the cultivar class and its market specialization.
