Blueberry frost resistance

Vaccinium corymbosum L.

The ability of highbush blueberry to withstand low temperatures during the dormancy period, evaluated by critical tissue and bud damage thresholds.

Blueberry frost resistance is determined using laboratory shoot freezing methods and field observations of tissue damage levels after winter. The indicator used is the temperature that causes critical damage: most varieties tolerate down to -30 °C, while certain hybrids withstand down to -42 °C.

Sensitivity to low temperatures depends on the plant's growth stage. In spring, swelling buds are damaged at -9…-12 °C, opening buds at -6…-9 °C, and the "pink bud" stage is critical at -4 °C and below.

Frost resistance is directly related to shoot maturation, which can be delayed by excessive nitrogen nutrition or a prolonged warm autumn. Early-ripening varieties generally possess higher frost resistance due to the timely completion of their vegetative cycle.
