Clematis Frost Resistance

Clematis L.

The frost resistance of clematis determines a cultivar's ability to withstand winter temperatures and is evaluated using USDA hardiness zones. This trait dictates planting site selection, the necessity for winter protection, and the pruning group choice for a specific cultivar.

In the reference 71 varieties crop Clematis, where this is mentioned in the description.

For clematis, the primary tool for assessing frost resistance is the USDA hardiness zone scale, which is based on average annual minimum temperatures. The lower the zone number, the lower the temperatures a cultivar can endure. Plant hardiness in field conditions depends not only on varietal characteristics but also on the microclimate of the site, the hardening status of the shoots, and the presence of protective structures.

The most frost-resistant types include members of the Atragene group, which overwinter without protection on trellises, as well as cultivars of the Viticella and Integrifolia groups, which can withstand temperatures down to -30 °C. Less winter-hardy cultivars, belonging to USDA zones 5 and higher, require mandatory removal from supports and winter covering in northern regions to protect the root system and aerial parts.

The frost resistance trait is closely linked to agronomic practices and pruning groups. Cultivars in pruning group 3, which bloom on current year's growth, are more practical for harsh climates since their shoots are pruned down to ground level. Cultivars that bloom on the previous year's growth require the preservation of stems, which significantly complicates their overwintering in low-temperature conditions.
