Cultivation
Clematis L.
Characteristics of Clematis as a cut flower crop, determined by its water metabolism physiology, bud opening stage, and ability to maintain decorative value through specialized stem preparation.
In the reference 24 varieties crop Clematis, where this is mentioned in the description.
Clematis stems possess a high transpiration rate, which requires immediate rehydration in cool water for 10–24 hours post-harvest. Unlike other crops, the use of floral foam or test tubes does not provide sufficient hydration to sustain the flower, which can retain its decorative appearance for up to 21 days with proper care.
Suitability for cutting depends on the bud opening stage, with 70% bloom or the semi-open stage being optimal. To reduce moisture loss, most leaves must be removed during stem preparation. Marketable quality, such as stem lengths of 50 to 70 cm, is achieved through the use of special supports in greenhouse or open-field cultivation.
Cultivar selection is a key factor, as suitability is determined by genetically fixed stem strength and resistance to Botrytis. The Integrifolia, Diversifolia, and Texensis groups, as well as breeding series adapted for transportation and extended vase life, are most in demand for professional floristry.
