The variety is a herbaceous clematis that grows as a compact spreading shrub and does not require support. The plant height is 1.5–2 meters. The flowers, 6–8 cm in diameter, consist of 6 glossy dark purple sepals with contrasting purple stamens and yellow anthers.

Flowering occurs on current year's growth from June to September. The plant has a USDA cold hardiness zone 5 rating. The variety is suitable for use in cut flower arrangements, container growing, borders, or as a ground cover plant.

The variety belongs to pruning group 3: strong pruning is recommended in early spring or late winter to a height of 10–30 cm. Clematis prefers sunny or semi-shaded locations and neutral soils. Genetically, the variety is related to Clematis integrifolia.
