Color is a key qualitative trait of Clematis, determined visually and dependent on pigment photostability. When evaluating cultivars, color resistance to fading under sunlight is taken into account and rated on a point scale.

To evaluate Clematis color, a visual method is used, supplemented by biochemical analysis of anthocyanin concentration, such as delphinidins for blue cultivars and cyanidins for red ones. The color resistance to fading is assessed on a scale where 10 points correspond to maximum stability, and low values indicate a loss of ornamental value due to shade changes.

Clematis color intensity depends directly on the level of insolation and the site's microclimate. With insufficient light, the color pales, while with excess light, many cultivars are prone to fading. For agrotechnical planning, it is necessary to consider the pigment photostability of a specific cultivar, as the color may change during flower aging or differ between the adaxial and abaxial sides of the sepals.
