Powdery mildew — sugar beet

Beta vulgaris Sugar Beet Group

A fungal disease of sugar beet caused by the obligate parasite Erysiphe betae. It manifests as a white web-like coating on leaves, leading to yellowing, a 20–30% reduction in root yield, and a decrease in sugar content.

In the reference 186 varieties crop Sugar beet, where this is mentioned in the description.

The pathogen Erysiphe betae infects the above-ground parts of the plant, including leaves, stems, and seed balls. Symptoms are typically detected in June–July as a delicate white coating on both sides of the leaf blades, which eventually becomes denser and takes on a powdery appearance. In the second half of the growing season, the fungus develops fruit bodies known as cleistothecia on the coating, appearing as small brown or black dots.

The development of the pathogen is favored by dry, hot weather at temperatures between +20 and +30°C and sharp fluctuations in air humidity. In breeding for resistance to the pathogen, marker-assisted selection methods are used, focusing on the study of the NBS-LRR gene family and the analysis of single nucleotide polymorphisms in potential resistance genes such as PMR5.
