Sunflower Powdery Mildew

Helianthus annuus L.

The disease is represented by true powdery mildew, caused by ascomycetes, and downy mildew (peronosporosis), the causal agent of which is the oomycete Plasmopara halstedii.

True powdery mildew of sunflower is caused by the fungi Erysiphe cichoracearum f. helianthi, Leveillula compositarum f. helianthi, and Sphaerotheca fuliginea. The disease manifests in the second half of the growing season as a white felty coating on the leaves or angular spots, and the formation of cleistothecia is possible at the end of the season.

Downy mildew is caused by the obligate parasite Plasmopara halstedii, which infects plants at early stages, leading to stunting, leaf crinkling, and a characteristic coating on the underside of the leaves. The pathogen population is highly variable and includes a number of races, such as 330, 334, 710, and 730.

To control downy mildew, genetic resistance determined by the Pl series genes (e.g., Pl6, Pl8, Plarg) is used. Identification of pathogen races is carried out using an international set of differential lines, which allows for the breeding of hybrids resistant to a complex of pathotypes.
