Tomato powdery mildew

Solanum lycopersicum L.

A fungal disease caused primarily by the pathogens Oidium neolycopersici and Leveillula taurica. It manifests as a powdery coating on plant organs, causing chlorosis, tissue necrosis, and reduced productivity.

In the reference 351 varieties crop Tomato, where this is mentioned in the description.

The primary pathogens of the disease are Oidium neolycopersici, which frequently affects greenhouse crops, and Leveillula taurica, characteristic of hot and dry climates; Erysiphe communis and Sphaerotheca fuliginea are also encountered. In the case of Oidium neolycopersici infection, coalescing white spots appear on the upper surface of the leaves, whereas Leveillula taurica is characterized by yellowish spots and sporulation developing primarily on the underside of the leaf.

The infection leads to the withering and shedding of leaves, as well as damage to petioles and stems, which reduces photosynthetic activity and contributes to fruit undersizing and the risk of sunscald due to defoliation. For the breeding of resistant varieties, genes from wild tomato species are used, including the Ol-1 gene from S. hirsutum, and resistance in documentation is designated by codes Lt for Leveillula taurica and On or Ol for Oidium neolycopersici.
