The disease manifests as whitish powdery spots on leaves and leaf sheaths, which eventually thicken, acquire a gray hue, and develop fruiting bodies. The plant responds to the infection by expressing defense genes associated with the synthesis of peroxidases and methyl groups.

Known resistance genes in this crop include TmPm3, Pm72, PmTb7A.1, PmTb7A.2, as well as the gene Pm37 (PmNCA6).
