Winter and spring forms of Triticum monococcum L.

Triticum monococcum L.

Triticum monococcum is predominantly a spring crop, with winter forms occurring significantly less frequently. The transition to the reproductive phase is regulated by the VRN1 and VRN2 genes, where a deletion of the latter locus determines the spring growth habit.

In the reference 9 varieties crop Einkorn wheat, where this is mentioned in the description.

Cultivated einkorn wheat is characterized by a predominance of spring forms, which distinguishes this species from other wheat species that have a more widespread occurrence of winter varieties. The genetic regulation of the growth habit involves vernalization genes VRN1 and the genes of the VRN2 locus, which consists of ZCCT1 and ZCCT2. It has been established that a deletion of the VRN2 locus directly leads to the formation of a spring growth habit, whereas specific mutations, such as mvp, cause flowering disorders due to disruptions in the vernalization system.

From an agronomic perspective, there are differences in productivity and grain quality between the forms. Winter forms of Triticum monococcum are capable of demonstrating higher yields, while spring forms often outperform them in terms of grain protein content. Ecologically, the species is closely associated with mountainous regions, which accounts for the specificity of its adaptation mechanisms to growing conditions.
