Winter and spring forms of rye

Secale cereale L.

Rye is predominantly cultivated as a winter crop due to the high cold tolerance of its tillering node, which can withstand temperatures down to -35 °C. The spring form is a niche crop used in regions with extreme winter conditions where overwintering is not possible.

In the reference 26 varieties crop Rye, where this is mentioned in the description.

Winter rye is characterized by a high capacity to withstand frost and efficiently utilize accumulated winter-spring soil moisture reserves. The crop's biological development cycle is divided into two active growth phases separated by a dormancy period, which ensures higher productivity compared to the spring form.

Spring rye completes its full development cycle within a single spring-summer period, lasting from 76 to 123 days. Spring rye varieties are adapted for rapid initial growth to compete with weeds and also possess increased resistance to spring frosts and summer drought, making them suitable for use in the conditions of Eastern Siberia.
