Winter and spring rapeseed forms

Brassica napus var. napus

The distinction between rapeseed forms lies in the biological requirement of the winter type for vernalization to transition to flowering, whereas spring rapeseed completes its full development cycle in a single season without cold exposure.

In the reference 93 varieties crop Rapeseed, where this is mentioned in the description.

Winter rapeseed requires exposure to low temperatures to undergo the vernalization stage and form reproductive organs. Its vegetation period lasts 250–265 days, which facilitates the development of a vigorous root system and ensures high yield potential under mild winter conditions, as the crop's winter hardiness is limited to temperatures around -10°C.

Spring rapeseed has no requirement for a cold stimulus and is adapted to a short vegetation period of 90 to 110 days. Unlike the winter form, it is less demanding regarding warm climates and overwintering, which allows for its cultivation in more northern regions, despite its lower potential productivity.
