Tissue necrosis in sunflowers acts as a characteristic manifestation of pathogen impact: Phoma black stem (Phoma macdonaldii), which manifests as stem necrosis; Phomopsis stem canker (Diaporthe helianthi), which destroys the vascular system; bacterial blight (Xanthomonas arboricola); Sclerotinia wilt; Alternaria leaf spot; Septoria leaf spot; and charcoal rot. Infectious necrosis can affect leaves, stems, and flower heads, often leading to stem brittleness and premature plant maturation.

Physiological necrosis of sunflower bracts is a non-infectious disease that develops during temperature stress above +35°C combined with moisture deficit during the budding phase. In addition, local cell necrosis is part of the genetically determined hypersensitive response (HR) mechanism, which the plant uses to limit the spread of pathogens at the site of their penetration.
