Potato tissue necrosis

Solanum tuberosum L.

Potato tissue necrosis is a symptom of cell death in leaves, stems, or tubers, occurring as a reaction to viruses, bacteria, fungi, or unfavorable abiotic conditions.

Viral necrosis manifests in specific forms: Tobacco rattle virus (TRV) and Potato mop-top virus (PMTV) cause internal zonal necrosis and rings in the tuber flesh. The PVY^NTN strain of Potato virus Y causes tuber ring necrosis and stem streak, while Potato leafroll virus (PLRV) induces net necrosis in vascular tissues.

Bacterial and fungal pathogens also lead to necrotic lesions: Pectobacterium and Dickeya cause systemic stem necrosis, Phytophthora infestans causes dry necrotic tuber rot and leaf blight, and Alternaria solani causes characteristic spots with target-like zonation.

Breeding for resistance to necrosis relies on the use of specific genes. Extreme resistance to Potato virus Y is provided by Ry genes (e.g., Rysto, Ryadg), to late blight by R-genes (R1, R2), and to Potato virus X by Rx genes. Pathogen identification is conducted based on strain virulence, such as PVY^O, PVY^N, and PVY^NTN.
