Grapevine tissue necrosis

A group of infectious and physiological grapevine diseases characterized by the necrosis of shoot, cordon, or leaf tissues. The primary forms include spotted necrosis, bacterial necrosis, and infectious necrosis, caused by specific pathogens or viral agents.

Spotted necrosis, or dead-arm, is caused by the fungus Rhacodiella vitis (sexual stage Mollisia vitis). The disease affects the perennial parts of the vine, where dark brown spots of necrotic tissue form under the bark, leading to the drying of cordons through girdling, which is particularly active during the dormant period under high humidity conditions.

Bacterial necrosis, caused by the bacterium Xylophilus ampelinus, manifests as reddish-brown cracks on shoots in spring and early summer. These lesions can reach the pith, causing wilting and dieback of vine parts, as well as the appearance of necrotic spots on leaf blades.

Infectious necrosis of viral origin is accompanied by leaf deformation and the development of yellow-green mottling between the veins, followed by tissue necrosis. In addition, necrotic disorders include vascular wood necrosis associated with Fusarium viticolum and Botrytis cinerea, and bark necrosis caused by the fungus Phomopsis viticola.
