Melon tissue necrosis

Tissue necrosis in melon is a symptomatic manifestation of a number of viral, bacterial, and fungal diseases rather than an independent disease. Its development serves as a diagnostic sign of pathogen infection, requiring the monitoring of cultivar resistance to specific pathogens.

Melon necrotic spot virus (MNSV) causes symptoms most characteristic of this term, including necrotic spots, chlorosis, and systemic wilting of plant tissues. In the case of bacterial infections, such as angular leaf spot, necrosis follows the appearance of greasy spots, leading to leaf shot-holing, while the bacterium Erwinia carnegieana provokes the appearance of dry, hard necrosis on the fruit surface.

Fungal pathogens, in particular Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. melonis, cause necrosis of interveinal tissues due to the disruption of the plant's vascular system. In the case of alternaria blight, necrotic processes develop in areas with characteristic concentric spots. In modern melon breeding, resistance to the complex of diseases causing necrosis is ensured by working with complex resistance genes and NLR-clusters, rather than through targeted selection for the absence of the necrosis symptom per se.
