Bean tissue necrosis

Tissue necrosis in beans is a symptom of viral, bacterial, or fungal pathogen infection, manifesting as the death of leaf, stem, and pod tissues.

Viral infections in beans, caused by the Bean Common Mosaic Virus (BCMV) and its necrotic strain (BCMNV), are characterized by systemic necrosis of the growing points, known as "black root." Resistance to these is controlled by the dominant gene I and a complex of recessive genes bc-1, bc-1(2), bc-2, and bc-3.

Bacterial infections, including common blight, halo blight, and bacterial wilt, cause darkening and necrosis of tissues. The process begins with water-soaked spots and necrosis of leaf veins, spreading to stems and pods, often accompanied by chlorosis and general wilting of the plant.

Fungal pathogens, such as anthracnose, gray mold (Botrytis), and Fusarium wilt, cause extensive local or systemic necrosis. Anthracnose manifests as lesions on plant organs, gray mold occurs through the softening and subsequent necrosis of tissues, and Fusarium wilt triggers necrotic lesions within the vascular system of the stem.
