hybrids between Solanum lycopersicum L. and S. habrochaites S. Knapp & D.M. Spooner
Interspecific tomato hybrids with S. habrochaites do not possess innate resistance to root-knot nematodes of the genus Meloidogyne, relying instead on the Mi-1 gene. The use of the REX-1 marker to monitor this gene in these hybrids is complicated by introgressions from the wild species, which cause…
In the reference 79 varieties crop hybrids between Solanum lycopersicum L. and S. habrochaites S. Knapp & D.M. Spooner, where this is mentioned in the description.
Interspecific hybrids of Solanum lycopersicum and Solanum habrochaites are susceptible to root-knot nematodes Meloidogyne incognita, Meloidogyne arenaria, Meloidogyne hapla, and Meloidogyne javanica. The nature of the symptoms is identical to that of cultivated tomatoes and manifests as the formation of galls on the roots, which obstruct the plant's normal nutrient uptake.
Nematode resistance in these hybrids is provided by the presence of the Mi-1 gene, located on chromosome 6, rather than by contributions from the wild species genome. Breeding such rootstocks requires rigorous phytopathological testing, as the REX-1 molecular marker often produces false-positive results in the presence of S. habrochaites introgressions associated with other resistance genes.
