Root infestation manifests as galls, which, in cases of severe infection, coalesce into large masses, disrupting the vascular system. In the aerial parts, this is expressed as stunted growth, chlorosis, and diurnal wilting of the plants.
Genetic resistance of tomatoes to the species M. incognita, M. javanica, and M. arenaria is provided by the dominant gene Mi (or Mi-1), which triggers a hypersensitive response in reaction to the parasite's invasion. It is important to note that the effect of this gene generally does not extend to the species M. hapla.
