The seeding rate of bulb onion is a management tool for bulb caliber and stand density, which determine the quality of marketable produce.

To obtain marketable bulb onions in annual cultivation, the target stand density is 800–1300 thousand plants/ha, although for growing larger bulbs, the rate is reduced to 600–800 thousand plants/ha. When cultivating sets, the rates are significantly higher, at approximately 500 thousand plants/ha when planting sets or 8–10 g/m² when sowing seeds to prevent reduced sugar content and improper ripening.

Due to slow initial growth and high sensitivity to intraspecific competition, onions do not tolerate overcrowding, and a distance of less than 4 cm between plants leads to a sharp decline in marketable yield. At the 4–5 leaf stage, plants are extremely critical to environmental conditions; therefore, precise adherence to the seeding rate prevents premature bulb formation and the transition of the harvest into the category of unripened produce.
