Hordeum vulgare L.
The barley seeding rate is adapted to varietal tillering capacity, soil fertility, and sowing dates to ensure optimal stand density. For spring barley, the range is typically 4.0–5.0 million, and for winter barley 2.0–4.5 million viable seeds per hectare.
In the reference 51 varieties crop Barley, where this is mentioned in the description.
Malting barley varieties, due to their high productive tillering, require reduced seeding rates (3.5–4.0 million seeds/ha), whereas low-tillering varieties require increased rates of up to 6.0 million seeds/ha. With high soil fertility, the optimal rate can be reduced to 3.0 million seeds/ha, and in the case of late sowing, it must be increased by 10–15% to compensate for the reduced tillering intensity.
Due to differences in 1000-kernel weight, especially in two-row varieties, it is recommended to calculate the rate in millions of viable seeds per hectare rather than in kilograms. Exceeding the threshold of 5.5 million seeds/ha on high-yield backgrounds is impractical, as this intensifies intraspecific competition, promotes lodging, and reduces grain quality parameters such as protein content and husk content.
