The calculation of the seeding rate is based on the target plant density at harvest, which is adjusted by 10–25% to compensate for field emergence failures and technical losses. In arid conditions, the rate is reduced to 35–45 thousand plants/ha to minimize intraspecific competition, while in zones with sufficient moisture or under irrigation, it is increased to 55–65 thousand plants/ha.
Overcrowding sunflower crops leads to a 2–3% decrease in oil content and a reduction in thousand-seed weight due to intense competition for resources. Given the crop's limited ability for branching and compensating for sparse stands, uniform seed distribution and achieving synchronous emergence are critical factors for productivity. Furthermore, the selection of stand density regulates the microclimate within the canopy, which is essential for preventing the development of head rots.
