Cultivation
Avena sativa L.
The optimal seeding rate of oats to achieve maximum grain productivity is 4.0–5.5 million viable seeds per hectare.
In the reference 23 varieties crop Oat, where this is mentioned in the description.
For common oats (Avena sativa), the generally accepted seeding range is 4.0–5.5 million viable seeds per hectare. When deviating from the optimal early planting dates, the rate must be adjusted upward. In case of a seven-day delay in sowing, the rate should be increased to 5.0–5.5 million seeds to compensate for potential yield loss; however, if sowing is delayed by more than 14 days, further rate adjustment becomes ineffective.
The selection of a seeding rate depends on agrotechnical conditions and production goals. On highly cultivated soils, the rate can be reduced, while in conditions of heavy weed infestation, it is increased to 6.0 million seeds per hectare to enhance the crop's competitive ability. When cultivating oats for green forage or as part of grain mixtures, rates are selected individually, taking into account the objectives for vegetative mass formation.
Oats possess the ability to self-regulate productivity through tillering and variations in the number of grains per panicle, which limits the need for excessive crop density. The final mass-based seeding rate in kilograms per hectare is calculated based on the target number of viable seeds, with a mandatory adjustment for the actual sowing quality of a specific seed lot.
