Triticale seeding rate

The seeding rate for triticale varies depending on the crop type: for winter triticale, it ranges from 3.5 to 7.5 million, and for spring triticale, it is 4.0–5.5 million viable seeds per hectare. These values are adjusted based on soil and climatic conditions, soil fertility, and preceding crops.

For winter triticale, the seeding rate depends on the region: in the Non-Chernozem zone, about 6.5 million seeds/ha is recommended; in the Chernozem zone, 5–6 million seeds/ha; and in Siberia, up to 7.5 million seeds/ha. Spring triticale is sown at a rate of 4.0–5.5 million viable seeds per hectare, which in weight equivalent ranges from 150 to 280 kg/ha.

The rate is adjusted based on the agricultural background: on highly fertile and weed-free soils, it is reduced by 10%, while on poor soils or if sowing dates are missed, it is increased by 10–15%. When selecting the rate, the preceding crop is taken into account: after the best options, 4.0–4.5 million seeds/ha are sown, and after the worst, 5.0–5.5 million seeds/ha.

Triticale possesses a high tillering capacity, which allows for a productive stand density at relatively low rates. The crop requires slightly higher seeding rates compared to wheat; however, due to the strength of the root system, seeds can be sown 1 cm deeper, which is effective under moisture deficiency.
