Generally, the proportion of leaves is higher at the beginning of the growing season and gradually decreases towards the flowering and maturation stages, when the mass of stems and generative organs increases.
During variety trials, leafiness is evaluated as part of the variety's agricultural utility through gravimetric analysis of green mass samples. High values are preferred for forage crops, while low values may indicate coarseness, which reduces digestibility and the nutritional quality of the product.
