Variety traits

Tomato Foliation

Solanum lycopersicum L.

A morphological trait evaluated in variety trials as the density of the leaf canopy. It influences the plant training strategy, protection of fruits from sunburn, and the phytosanitary status of the plants.

In the reference 306 varieties crop Tomato, where this is mentioned in the description.

Tomato foliation is defined as a subjective visual assessment, which is recorded during variety trials on a point scale. This trait considers the ability of the leaf canopy to cover the stem and fruits; however, in breeding work, it remains a qualitative characteristic, despite the possibility of recording the total number of leaves or their surface area.

The expression of the trait is selected based on growing conditions: low foliation is preferred in northern regions to improve fruit light exposure, while high foliation is necessary in southern regions for protection against sunscald. Excessive leaf development can shift the plant balance towards vegetative growth and create conditions for fungal diseases due to poor aeration of the plant.

The level of foliation directly determines the intensity of agrotechnical practices, such as pruning and leaf removal. Proper regulation of green mass is necessary to maintain a balance between vegetative and generative development, as well as to ensure optimal light conditions and air circulation within the crop.
