Variety traits
Gerbera L.
The color of Gerbera ray florets is a key breeding trait evaluated through CIE L*a*b* instrumental systems and UPOV visual guides.
In the reference 78 varieties crop Gerbera, where this is mentioned in the description.
To quantitatively assess Gerbera petal color, the CIE L*a*b* colorimetric system is used, which determines lightness, chromatic coordinates, chroma, and hue. The visual method involves classification into color groups, taking into account the presence of contrasting zones, such as the color of the central disc or the rimming of the petals.
Gerbera is characterized by a wide spectrum of colors, with the exception of blue. Breeding is aimed at creating solid-colored and bicolored (cockade) forms. The intensity of color expression directly depends on lighting conditions, and the genetic stability of the color is ensured by vegetative propagation or the use of F1 hybrid seeds.
