When cultivating tuberous begonia, it is critical to maintain substrate moisture balance, avoiding overwatering to protect the tuber from rot.

For tuberous begonia, a cyclic 'wet-dry' irrigation regime is applied, where the substrate must dry to a moderately moist state before the next watering. Excess moisture in the tuber zone is unacceptable, as it provokes bacterial and fungal rot of the tuber and stem base. Use water with a temperature of at least 18 °C for irrigation.
The method of water application must prevent moisture from reaching the leaves and stems to avoid disease development; therefore, bottom watering or applying water at the base is preferred. During the seedling stage, the substrate must be saturated for the first 11 days; however, from day 21, a drying cycle is adopted. During the dormancy period, watering is reduced, and while storing tubers, the substrate must remain dry.
