Irrigation of Erica gracilis

Erica gracilis requires the substrate moisture to be kept constant, while avoiding any waterlogging. Due to its shallow root system, the crop is critically sensitive to water quality and irrigation regimen, tolerating neither drought nor excessive moisture.

It is critical for Erica gracilis to use only soft, settled, or rainwater, as the presence of lime is fatal to the plant. Watering should be regular, based on the drying of the top 5 cm of the substrate. Complete drying of the root ball causes leaf and bud drop, while stagnant water in the saucer leads to rapid root rot.

The irrigation technique must avoid wetting the foliage to prevent fungal infections. If the peaty substrate becomes severely dry, the immersion method for one hour is recommended. Proper air humidity is maintained by misting or placing the pot on a tray with damp pebbles; however, excess water must be removed from the tray immediately after watering.
