Variety traits

Rapeseed shattering

Brassica napus L.

Rapeseed shattering is the dehiscence of brittle pods at maturity, leading to significant seed yield losses in the field. This trait is determined by the genetic characteristics of the pod dehiscence zone structure and moisture conditions.

In the reference 42 varieties crop Rapeseed, where this is mentioned in the description.

Seed losses due to premature shattering average 8–12%; however, under unfavorable weather conditions or delayed harvesting, they can reach up to 50%. The presence of genetic resistance to shattering allows for the optimization of harvesting technology and eliminates the need for pre-harvest swathing.

To assess pod resistance, the force measurement method (measured in newtons) is used, with values ranging from 0.98–5.14 N, as well as random impact tests and visual scoring. Shattering resistance is genetically controlled and linked to the tissue structure of the pod, which necessitates the use of molecular markers in the development of new hybrids.
