Shattering — soybean

Glycine max (L.) Merr.

Soybean shattering is a genetically determined tendency of pods to split along the dorsal and ventral sutures during maturation, resulting in significant yield losses during mechanized harvesting.

In the reference 63 varieties crop Soybean, where this is mentioned in the description.

To evaluate the resistance of varieties to pod shattering, a forced drying method is used, in which samples are subjected to a temperature of 60°C. Under field conditions, resistance is determined by the ability to retain seeds in the pods for 4–6 weeks after physiological maturity, and losses are estimated by direct counting of seeds per unit area.

Varieties demonstrating shattering in more than 70–80% of pods in provocative tests are considered unsuitable for commercial production. Yield losses are directly dependent on the condition of the pod valve sutures, which weaken due to alternating wetting and drying cycles or as a result of drought during the yield formation period.
