Outdoor Cultivation of Impatiens walleriana

For the cultivation of Impatiens walleriana in open ground, sites in partial shade are selected, as direct sunlight causes leaf scorch. Due to the fragility of the succulent stems, it is necessary to choose windless areas protected from strong gusts. Planting is carried out only after the threat of late spring frosts has completely passed, as the crop is critically sensitive to temperatures below +5 °C.

The plant prefers loose, fertile soils with a slightly acidic reaction and good drainage. It is important to maintain constant, moderate moisture of the substrate, avoiding both drying out and waterlogging, which causes root rot. In mass plantings, to form dense floral displays, it is recommended to maintain a spacing of 20–30 cm between specimens.

The key phytopathological risk in open ground is the high susceptibility of the species to downy mildew. Infection by this pathogen often limits the use of Impatiens walleriana in landscape design, which encourages the breeding of resistant varieties.
